TROGIR

TROGIR, CROATIA

Trogir is a port city on the Adriatic coast, located on a small island between the mainland of Croatia and the island of Chievo.

Trogir has over 2300 years of history. Its culture was established under the influence of the ancient Hellenes, and then of the Romans and the Venetians. The city has preserved impressive medieval palaces, churches and fortifications. In 1997, it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as the best-preserved Roman-Gothic complex throughout Europe. The mediaeval core of the city, surrounded by fortress walls, combines Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architectural styles.

There are highly developed fishing and agriculture and local traditions are still preserved among the population in the surroundings of the city. The most important industry is shipbuilding, with the "Trogir" shipyard, established in the early 20th century.

Among the sights of the old city are the St. Lavrentian Cathedral, the Chipico Palace, the St. Nicholas Monastery, the town's loggia, the Princely Palace and many others.
