SARAEVO, BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

Sarajevo is the capital of Bosnia & Herzegovina and the largest city in the country. It is situated by Miljacka river. The population today is 420 000. It was founded in 1461 when it became part of the Ottoman empire. Franz Ferdinand was assassinated here in 1914, which was the reason for the burst of the First World War. After the end of the Second World War the town grew in population and developed as important industrial, economic, cultural and educational center of Bosnia & Herzegovina. In this period the local university, opera house, a lot of museums and scientific institutions were founded. The city is a host of the Winter Olympics in 1984. After the fall of Jugoslavjia in 1991 the place is a victim of cruel war that finally finished 1995. Since then the city is undisputed capital of Bosnia & Herzegovina.
