OLD BRIDGE IN MOSTAR

MOSTAR, BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

The Old bridge crosses the Neretva River and connects the two parts of the city of Mostar . Its length is 30 meters and its height is 24 meters. It was built in 1557 on the initiative of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent by Mimar Hajrudin - a disciple of the greatest Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan. In 1993, during the Bosnian war, the bridge was destroyed by Croatian soldiers. In 2004, the Old Bridge was reconstructed and was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Today it is a symbol of Mostar, Herzegovina and of the relationship between Bosnian Muslims and Croats.
