Bachkovo Monastery is an Orthodox monastery, located in Southern Bulgaria. It is situated on the bank of the Chaya River, just 10 km from the town of Asenovgrad. It was founded in 1083 by the Byzantine commander Gregory Bakouriani and is the second largest monastery complex in Bulgaria. The monastery is located in a picturesque mountainous area next to the natural reserve "The Red Wall". The orthodox complex consists of 3 churches, kitchen and ossuary. The ossuary is the best-preserved part of the complex, with specific architectural design and ancient frescoes. The main church is famous for the miraculous icon of Saint Mary, Mother of Jesus.
